Slavery

Abstract

The essay contains reflections on the important issues, raised by Saidiya Hartman. Namely, the questions, where is a boundary between the formal constraints and issues of morality in the context of describing historical events and whether the emotional aspect should be taken into account or the lives of the unknown slaves should remain shrouded in mystery without going beyond formal restrictions. The text examines the aim of the essay “Venus in two acts” and the main dilemmas, expressed by its author. It also includes the attempts to determine the role of the narrator in the coverage of historical events, and the power given to him, which allows him to make an impact on the creation of the book about the history of humanity, but also simultaneously forces him to follow the rules of the overall system.
