PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENTS
I. Answer the following questions.
1. What is nonverbal communication? Nonverbal communication is the process of using wordless messages to generate meaning. In other words, it is a process when two individuals use means other than complete and widespread words and sounds to deliver some meaning and information to each other. 2. How do verbal and nonverbal codes work in conjunction? Verbal and nonverbal codes work in conjunction to improve the communication and emphasize the impact of each other. Besides, there are six types of conjunction of verbal and nonverbal codes: repeating, emphasizing, complementing, contradicting, substituting, and regulating. 3. What problems do people have in interpreting nonverbal codes? Although nonverbal codes are widely used by individuals for communication, and, to a great extent, such usage is subconscious and the signs are known to everyone, interpretation of such codes might cause problems. First of all, one code might have several meanings and might be interpreted in different ways depending what is an individual’s background. At the same time, several codes may be used to deliver the same message, and the choice depends on the culture of the communicator. 4. What are nonverbal codes? Nonverbal codes are the systems of communication that consist of symbols other than words as well as vocal expressions that are not words either. Such codes presuppose the operation of body and body parts, use of space, time, clothes and other nonverbal symbols. 5.What are the types of bodily movement in nonverbal communication? There are two approaches to the classification of bodily movement in nonverbal communication. According to the first one, such movement can be divided into the following groups: liking (expressing the feeling of affection regarding something or somebody), status (demonstration of the social position), and responsiveness (feedback to the other person). According to the other approach, the types of bodily movement are the following: emblems (direct substitutes for words), illustrators (accompany or reinforce verbal communication), affect displays (show emotions), regulators (are used to control the flow of communication), adaptors (are used differently in private and in public). 6. What role does physical attraction play in communication? Physical attraction is defined by the perception degree to which the other person is considered to be attractive. The more attractive he or she is, the more likely other people are to express affection. Besides, physical attraction has been proved to be one of the important aspects that define successful outcome of many events in life since attractive people are generally more credible and able to persuade others. 7. What are the factors determining the amount of personal space you use? The amount of personal space you use is determined by such factors as the personal bubble, the type of relationships with the other person, attitude to the other person, gender, physical setting of the situation, and the cultural background. 8. How are objects used in nonverbal communication? In nonverbal communication, objects hold the communication potential. Thus, they may have an effect if the other person pays attention to them. Objects can deliver the nonverbal message regarding age, status, gender, personality, and relationship to the other sex. Besides, they deliver physical and psychological protection since objects spread attraction and tell the opposite gender how attractive you are. Finally, objects such as clothing and other artifacts are able to tell of a person’s characteristics. 9. How might you improve your nonverbal communication? Although nonverbal communication is often subconscious, there are some ways to improve it. First, a special attention should be paid to the setting, which is one of the determinants of how a person perceive nonverbal communication. Secondly, it is necessary to pay attention to every nonverbal expression you make and adjust to every audience. Finally, you should be careful when giving feedback to other people since it will help others interpret your messages. |
